Our Mission
Project Canis is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2020 by students at the University of Florida with one simple mission: give every shelter animal a toy.
Each year, approximately 5.8 million cats and dogs enter animal shelters in the US. With limited funding and overwhelming need, shelters have to focus on essentials like food and medical care, leaving little resources to purchase enrichment items that support emotional well-being. Additionally, an estimated 17 million tons of textile waste is produced in the US each year.
Project Canis helps by creating and donating handmade pet toys made from recycled materials, like old t-shirts!

WHY IT MATTERS
Our work is important because shelter life is hard. Fear, stress, boredom, and isolation often lead to anxiety and behavioral issues, causing wonderful furry friends to become emotionally unstable and harder to adopt.
Enrichment toys help reduce stress, encourage positive behaviors, improve well-being, and give shelter animals comfort during one of the hardest periods of their lives. A healthy, happy dog or cat has a better chance of being adopted and finding their forever home with a family who loves them!
